5 Ways to Optimize Your Event for Mobile

If you’ve been to any tournament or event in the past five years, you’ve probably noticed just as many people looking at their phones as there are paying attention to the main event! So it will come as no surprise to many that in 2018, 57% of all Internet traffic in the US came from mobile users, and that number is only growing every year.

That being said, if you’re a tournament or event director and you haven’t fully optimized your attendees’ web experience for mobile, you’re most likely frustrating your customers (at best) or losing them entirely (at worst). In fact, when people have a negative brand experience on mobile, they are 62% less likely to purchase from you in the future!


Here are five ways you can optimize your event for mobile users to give them the best experience possible:

1. Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly:

At this point in the game, having a mobile-friendly site is no longer just an option – it’s a necessity. Google even announced in 2018 that they will be utilizing “mobile-first” indexing, which means that if you don’t have a mobile-friendly site, your site could show up lower in search results, even in desktop searches.

2. Send Mobile-Friendly Emails:

Ensure all of your communications are mobile-friendly as well by utilizing a service like MailChimp or Constant Contact, which automatically optimize emails for mobile delivery.

3. Get to the Point:

If advertising your tournament online – whether through paid ads or posts on your social media channels, like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, make sure your headlines are short and sweet so the content doesn’t get cut off for mobile users.

4. Use Mobile-Friendly Event Partners:

You’re probably working with some additional companies to help handle things like registration, payment, and housing. In order to deliver the best experience possible for your attendees, you’ll want it to be seamless from start to finish. The best way to handle this is simply to ask if all your partners are using mobile-friendly technology on their sites.

5. Use a Group Communication App:

More events are beginning to use apps that allow them to communicate with their attendees throughout the event, pushing out up-to-date schedules, maps, final scores, and other important updates. This can be a great way to keep people engaged throughout the event while also keeping everything organized and eliminating confusion.
